Redesigning a Family Heirloom Ring

After completing the bright blue aquamarine ring, Wei shared an amethyst ring passed down to her by her mother-in-law many years ago. It’s a cherished family heirloom. The amethyst was stunning, but the setting was low, causing the culet to rub against the finger.  Despite this, the ring had been worn regularly over the years, leading to thinning of the prongs.  This posed a risk of the gemstone becoming loose in the setting, or worse, falling out and being lost.

Wei proposed a redesign for both comfort and a little extra sparkle. We developed a three-stone design that paired this beautiful amethyst with 0.37ct pear-shaped diamonds.

The new ring is crafted in platinum, an elegant choice for the stones. However, setting this particular amethyst in a metal as hard as platinum was challenging due to its thin girdle cut.

But the benefits of setting in platinum are well worth it. Platinum is much denser than 18k gold, resulting in prongs that will withstand the test of time.  With increased durability, the ring is suitable for regular wear and can be passed down to the next generation.
